What to do first

  • Do not enter until the fire service has formally released the building.
  • Do not assume a structure is sound because it is standing.
  • Photograph the exterior and all openings before securing.
  • Shut off and drain water if the building will be unheated in winter.
  • Ask the fire service what they opened and where, and pass that on.

Before anyone arrives: do not go near an opening if the structure above it looks compromised, and never climb onto a damaged roof. A vehicle impact or fire can leave a wall standing that is no longer carrying load.

Charred structure will not hold a fixing

The complication specific to fire securing is that the material around the opening has often lost its strength. Timber that looks solid can be charred to a depth where a screw will not hold under load, and a panel fixed into it will come off in the first strong wind.

This is why a fire board-up sometimes has to fix back to sound structure well beyond the visible opening, and why the job can be larger than the size of the hole suggests. It is not padding — it is the only way the closure stays put.

The building will be open longer than you expect

Fire losses run on long timelines. Investigation, insurance assessment, and the scoping of a rebuild routinely take weeks before any repair work starts, and through that whole period the building is standing empty and secured only by whatever was fitted at the beginning.

That changes what "temporary" should mean on a fire job. A covering intended to last a fortnight will not survive three months of Minnesota weather, and it is worth being explicit at the outset about how long the securing needs to hold and having it checked periodically.
